Self-hosting on a 1 GB VPS
January 11, 2026
A one gigabyte VPS is enough for more than people expect, as long as you stay away from anything that ships a JVM or a full database cluster.
What runs fine here: nginx with a few static sites, a small Git mirror, a cron-driven feed reader and this blog. What did not fit: a self-hosted analytics stack, which wanted more memory than the whole machine has.
Two settings matter most on small machines: a modest swap file so the OOM killer is a last resort rather than a daily event, and worker_processes auto in nginx instead of a copied value from a tutorial written for a 16-core box.
